You Are Not What You Wear.
We are deeply valuable to God.
But sometimes we confuse ourselves. We start believing that we are what we wear.
Yet that is not the truth — because the clothes we wear can always be taken off again.
So often we put on jackets and coats that were never meant for us. They do not fit us.
They were never chosen by our Father. Instead, we picked them up somewhere along the road —
found in a dustbin,
collected on a detour,
or handed to us by someone else.Sometimes they were given by a parent,a friend, or even a stranger. But they never truly belonged to them either.
And so we dress ourselves in things like sin, shame, anger, pride, fear, lies, comparison, or perfectionism. Then we look at ourselves in the mirror — the Word of God —
and we do not like what we see.
Joshua in Dirty Clothes
One of my favorite passages in Scripture is found in Zechariah 3. There we meet a high priest named Joshua standing before the Angel of the Lord. This poor man stands in filthy garments — rags. Next to him stands Satan, accusing him before the Lord, listing everything Joshua has done wrong.
The situation looks hopeless:
dirty clothes,
and the enemy speaking condemnation over him.
But then something extraordinary happens. The Angel of the Lord rebukes Satan and silences him. He calls those standing nearby and commands them to remove Joshua’s filthy garments and dress him in clean clothes.
Later in Zechariah, gold and silver are gathered and an order goes out that there should be made an elaborate crown for Joshua, and he becomes the first High priest that also is King. Joshua becomes a prophetic picture of the One who would fulfill two offices — Priest and King.
And the Angel of the Lord says:
“See, I have taken away your sin, and I will put rich garments on you.”
A Wardrobe Bought by Jesus
Jesus has bought us a wardrobe.A place filled with clean, beautiful, perfectly fitted garments — chosen especially for us
Scripture repeatedly invites us to get dressed:
Colossians 3:12–14
Clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience… and over all these virtues put on love.
Romans 13:12–14
Let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light… clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ.
Galatians 3:27
All of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.
Ephesians 6
Put on the full armor of God.
Isaiah 61:10
He has clothed me with garments of salvation and arrayed me in a robe of righteousness.
Revelation 19:8
She was given fine linen, bright and clean, to wear.
Run to God — Even in Dirty Clothes
This week, run to God with your dirty clothes.
Even if the enemy follows along, trying to accuse you.
Do not be afraid.
We have a God who removes old garments,
who washes us completely clean,
and who lovingly dresses us in new clothes.
Remember:
You are not what you wear.
You can choose what to put on
and what to take off.
And above all —
You are deeply valuable to God.
